Director Carl Weil

Carl Weil, FAWM, MFWMA

Carl Weil holds numerous professional credentials, including Nationally Registered EMT, EMT-IV/MAST, Colorado Instructor-Coordinator, CPR Instructor Trainer, National Wilderness Instructor Trainer, and the distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM). In 2012, he became the first recipient of the Master Fellow designation when the program was introduced.

A Colorado State University graduate, Carl began his EMT career shortly after graduating. Raised in the Colorado mountains on his family’s ranch and guide service, he developed a deep connection to the outdoors early on. His public service roots began in high school, with work on Search and Rescue teams and teaching First Aid to Ski Patrollers while at CSU.

Carl has served as a Trip Medic on numerous expeditions, including as Medic and Guide on a Mount Everest expedition. He brings extensive real-world field experience to his classrooms, combining medical expertise with decades of outdoor leadership. His emergency medicine background ranges from work in Denver General’s Emergency Department to founding and operating a rural ambulance service.

He holds training certificates from a wide range of medical and rescue organizations and has served on both the Colorado First Responder committees and state EMT advisory groups. As part of national education initiatives with the Wilderness Medical Society, Carl contributed to developing the standards and SOPs for Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder programs. He also helped author and publish those standards and coordinated the writing group’s websiteWFR-SOP.org, founded by eight leading wilderness medicine schools, including WMO.

Beyond education, Carl has reviewed over 3,000 outdoor programs as a professional risk manager and has served as an expert witness in more than 300 legal cases, both civil and criminal. His multifaceted background also includes two honorable discharges from the U.S. Marine Corps, professional work as an outdoor guide, and service as a peace officer on two law enforcement agencies. Public service runs deep in his family — his grandparents, parents, and son have all served as veterans, guides, and lawmen.

He looks forward to answering your questions and helping you.
