Making Backcountry Medical Care Accessible

Wilderness medicine is the art and science of providing critical medical care in remote locations—where ambulances can’t reach and patients may face long transports—relying on skill, improvisation, and resourcefulness. At Wilderness Medicine Outfitters, we have designed, defined, and taught emergency wilderness medicine courses since 1967.

Our Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course is the industry-standard level of medical training for professional outdoor recreation staff working on multi-day or overnight trips in remote environments. It is an excellent choice for search and rescue personnel, disaster response workers, and professionals in remote-location industries. Its thorough and practical curriculum has also become popular among outdoor enthusiasts, endurance athletes, and adventure travelers who venture into areas with limited resources, unreliable communication, and the possibility of delayed or self-rescue.

Course participants develop strong patient assessment skills, learn to stabilize life-threatening injuries and medical conditions, and practice prolonged field care in challenging environments. The training emphasizes prevention—helping individuals recognize environmental risks, manage pre-existing conditions in the field, and make sound decisions before problems escalate. Students also gain the confidence to manage rescue communications effectively and to perform or coordinate safe evacuations.
